The mechanical machining process that allows the modeling in flat or complex shapes of pieces of various types of materials, takes the name of milling. To carry out this process, a special machine called a milling machine or computerized numerical control machining center is used (CNC).
Some machining centers are called turning-milling centers, in the event that both processes can be carried out. In special situations, especially for high production volumes, milling can be performed in dedicated "transfer" machines.
The milling process requires the rotation of a cutting tool with defined geometry mounted on a spindle and the simultaneous movement of the motorized axes. However, it is essential to know the characteristics of the materials to be processed in order to choose the most suitable cutters and inserts.
